How to restore crumbling masonry using only manual hand tools
In short: When mortar begins to decay, you do not always need a full-scale reconstruction. Through a process called spot pointing, a homeowner can repair a brick floor or wall, saving significant time and money by targeting only the damaged sections of the masonry.
The process of repointing requires a methodical approach to ensure the new mortar bonds correctly with the existing structure. According to mason Mark McCullough, the first step involves using a chisel to remove old, crumbling mortar down to a depth of approximately 1/2 inch. It is essential to prioritize the head joints before moving on to the bed joints to ensure a thorough cleaning of the gaps.
Preparation of the material is just as critical as the removal of the old mortar. After using a clean out tool and a brush to clear excess debris, the brick itself must be dampened with water. The mortar mix, which can be pre- มixed in a desired color, should be prepared in a bucket by slowly adding water to the mix and stirring with a trowel until it reaches an oatmeal-like consistency.
The application phase demands precision to maintain the aesthetic integrity of the masonry. Using a finish trowel or a hawk, the mason pushes the mortar into the joint using a flat joiner. A key rule in this craft is to avoid getting any mortar onto the face of the brick. Once the joint is filled, any excess material should be wiped away using a dry brush. While more complex repairs exist, techniques like spot pointing allow for targeted maintenance of specific areas without the need for a full repoint job.
