How to master the art of patching a hole in a brick wall
In short: Repairing a damaged brick wall is a moderate to difficult task that often defies professional help. For small repairs, hiring a mason can be challenging, making it an ideal project for a determined homeowner to tackle using a few specialized tools and a bit of patience.
To begin a successful repair, you must first identify and remove any bricks that are no longer full-sized. This process requires precision; use an angle grinder to cut along the mortar lines nearest to the damaged section. To manage the significant amount of dust generated during cutting, it is highly recommended to use a grinder equipped with a vacuum attachment connected to a HEPA vacuum.
Once the lines are cut, carefully tap the misplaced bricks out with a hammer. It is vital to monitor the surrounding mortar lines for resistance, as any unexpected tension suggests that adjacent bricks might also be damaged and require removal. After the hole is cleared of old bricks and mortar, use a masonry brush—first dry, then wet—to thoroughly wipe away any remaining dust from the surface.
The reconstruction phase begins with mixing mortar and water until the mixture reaches an oatmeal-like consistency. Apply mortar to the wall and the replacement brick, then wiggle the brick into place, tapping it gently with the back of a trowel to align it with the existing row. Use a tuck pointer to fill the joints as deeply as possible, followed by a concave jointer to slick down the joints.
The final step involves cleaning the face of the bricks. Use a masonry brush to remove excess mortar, then perform one final slick with the concave jointer. While the process requires specific tools like a trowel, masonry brush, and jointers, most of these items are readily available at local home centers for rent or purchase.
