Changing your door swing is a precise carpentry task requiring patience and specific tools

How to Swap the Swing of an Entry Door | Ask This Old House · 9:01 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Ever wished your entry door opened the other way? While it might seem like a simple swap, reversing a door swing involves meticulous woodworking, from filling old hinge mortises to carving new ones. Nathan Gilbert and Tom Silva demonstrate how to execute this structural change on a standard fiberglass door.

The process begins by removing the door from its frame, which requires using a hammer and nail set to extract the hinge pins. Once the door is placed on saw horses, the hinges are removed, and the original holes must be filled with wood dowels. These are secured with wood glue, trimmed flush with a chisel, and sanded with 100-grit sandpaper to create a smooth surface for the new hinge placement. The hinges are then flipped and reattached to the opposite side of the door.

Hardware management is equally critical. The door handle and deadbolt are removed, and their corresponding strikers must be flipped and reinstalled to accommodate the new orientation. The door sweep also requires adjustment, often involving a chisel and a bead of super glue to ensure it remains properly positioned. These steps ensure the door functions correctly once the swing direction is reversed.

The most demanding phase involves modifying the door frame. You must measure the distance from the top of the frame to the hinge mortises and transfer these marks to the opposite side. Old mortises are patched with scrap wood, secured with glue and brad nails, and finished with spray paint to match the frame. New mortises are then carved using a drill with a forstner bit and a chisel. Finally, the door is rehung, and the striker locations are marked by coloring the latch with a pencil, allowing for precise chiseling of the final frame recesses.

It is important to note that this process varies significantly depending on the door's material and construction. Nathan Gilbert performed this specific project on a fiberglass door that featured identical detailing on both sides, which simplified the aesthetic integration. All necessary tools, including the drill, chisel, hammer, and spray paint, are readily available at standard home improvement centers.
