Mastering the rhythm: the fundamental mechanics of DJ scratching
In short: Beyond the rhythmic noise lies a precise physical discipline. Whether you are executing a simple baby scratch or a complex chirp, success depends on the delicate interplay between hand position, fader timing, and the constant rotation of the turntable motor.
The foundation of scratching lies in controlling the record's movement without disrupting the turntable's momentum. For the most basic technique, known as the 'baby scratch,' the goal is a simple forward and back motion. To achieve clarity, a DJ must locate the sharpest part of a sound—such as the initial 'ah'—rather than the duller middle. Precision is also required in hand placement; the hand should rest in the 'V-pocket' of the record, roughly between the 8 and 11 o'clock positions. Positioning the hand too high risks hitting the needle out of the groove, while placing it too low creates an awkward, ineffective grip.
As techniques advance to the 'chirp,' the complexity shifts to the synchronization of the hand on the record and the hand on the fader. In a standard chirp, the DJ moves the record forward while simultaneously closing the fader to cut the sound in half. As the record is pulled back, the fader is opened to allow the full sound to emerge. The key to a clean chirp is ensuring the hands move in unison—moving together and away from each other—rather than attempting to isolate the movements.
The 'forward scratch' introduces a high-speed challenge: the fader hand must actually move faster than the hand on the record. By opening the fader and releasing the record at the exact same moment, the DJ ensures that only the forward motion is heard. If the fader is not closed immediately following the forward motion, the resulting 'back pull' creates a sloppy, unpleasant sound. Mastering these nuances requires maintaining the platter's flow while precisely timing the interruption of the audio signal.
