How to Select Houseplants for Your Home | Ask This Old House · 6:47 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Most people buy a plant and then try to manipulate their environment to keep it alive. The secret to a thriving indoor jungle is the opposite: selecting species that already tolerate your specific light, humidity, and temperature. It is about adaptation, not alteration.

The primary challenge of indoor gardening is that domestic environments are inconsistent. A bathroom provides high humidity, while a living room with central heating can become quite dry in winter. Light levels also fluctuate wildly; a spot with direct sun in the summer might scorch leaves, while that same location becomes a prime growing spot in the weaker light of winter. To succeed, you must match the plant's biological needs to these fixed conditions rather than trying to change them. For low-light areas, specific species are engineered for survival. The Snake Plant (Sansevieria), often called 'mother-in-law's tongue,' is noted as one of the toughest plants on the planet, capable of tolerating low light better than almost any other houseplant. Similarly, the ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is highly recommended for beginners because it tolerates very little light and requires minimal watering. If you have a north-facing window, which can be tricky in winter, these are your most reliable options. Conversely, flowering plants like Gardenias require much more intensive care. They need high humidity, which can be achieved by misting the leaves frequently and placing the pot on a tray of pebbles filled with water. For those seeking functional greenery, certain plants perform translocation to clean the air of toxins. One large houseplant can purify the air in a 100-square-foot area. When selecting, always inspect the undersides of the foliage for insects and avoid plants with yellow chlorotic leaves or brown margins, as these are signs of stress that the plant may not recover from.
