Why your modern airtight roof might be rotting from the inside out

A hot roof uses spray foam to create an airtight, ventless system, but it carries a hidden risk. This video explains why this design often leads to ridge rot and introduces a specialized ventilation fix to protect your home structure.

Traditional roofing relies on a 'cold roof' design, which uses ventilation to regulate temperature and moisture. However, when mechanical systems are installed in an attic, a vented space can cause operational issues. To solve this, builders use a 'hot roof' approach, applying spray foam directly under the roof deck to create an airtight seal.

While this method has been used for some time, experience has revealed a significant flaw: moisture accumulation leading to rot specifically at the ridge. To mitigate this, experts now recommend installing a diffusion vent. This component allows the roof to maintain its airtight benefits while providing the necessary airflow to prevent structural decay.
