Mastering the weave: how to tension a rope-tuned djembe
In short: Tuning a rope-tuned djembe is less about hitting a specific musical pitch and more about mastering a complex weaving pattern. By using specific mechanical movements to tighten the cords, you can increase the drum's tension without risking a popped skin.
Tuning a rope-tuned djembe involves a rhythmic, repetitive weaving process designed to bring the drum's ring down and increase tension. The fundamental technique requires treating each strand as a single unit and weaving the cord under and over multiple strands. By pulling these strands closer together, you create the necessary tension to tighten the drumhead.
The mechanism relies on a specific sequence: you weave the cord under two strands, then over one, and under one to create a locking pattern. This tension is what prevents the rope from unsnapping. Because the tension can become quite intense, practitioners often use tools to assist the process. A screwdriver can help push a cord under a strand if it becomes too difficult for fingers alone, while a stick or a mountain climbing cleat can provide the leverage needed to grab and pull the rope.
To lock the tension in place, one effective method is to use a stick to create a figure-eight pattern. Once the stick is locked, you can use your feet to pull the rope until it flips, effectively tightening the drum. However, caution is essential; you must avoid overtightening, as excessive tension can cause the skin to pop. Unlike many other instruments, there is no requirement to tune the djembe to a specific musical pitch; the goal is simply to reach a tension level that feels right to the player.
