How to calibrate the mechanical precision of a pedal steel guitar

How to Tune the A Pedal | Pedal Steel Guitar · 3:10 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Tuning a pedal steel guitar involves more than just adjusting strings. To ensure pedals and knee levers shift notes accurately, players must calibrate the mechanism itself. Using a small socket wrench, musicians fine-tune the degree of pitch change, ensuring every pedal strike hits the exact frequency required.

Tuning a pedal steel guitar is a two-stage process. First, the player uses standard tuning pegs to set the open string tunings. Once the strings are set, the focus shifts to the mechanical tuning mechanism. This system controls how much a pedal or knee lever raises or lowers a string, effectively determining the interval of the pitch shift.

To adjust these movements, players use a 3/16-inch socket wrench to turn small hex nuts. It is important to understand that 'increasing' the setting does not necessarily mean raising the pitch; rather, it increases the amount of effect the pedal has on the string. For example, if a pedal is intended to raise a string but the resulting note is slightly flat, the player must increase the pedal's effect to reach the target frequency.

Precision is vital during this calibration. When adjusting the A pedal, for instance, a player might target a specific note like a C-sharp at 438.5 Hz. If the tuner shows the note is slightly sharp, the hex nut must be turned counter-clockwise by a very small amount. Because these mechanisms are highly sensitive, even minute adjustments are necessary to achieve perfect pitch.

Identifying the correct component is also a practical challenge. A player must observe which string moves when a pedal is depressed to ensure they are adjusting the correct hex nut. For example, if the lowest string is the only one moving when a specific pedal is pressed, that is the component requiring adjustment to correct any flatness.
