Mastering the mechanics of the hip: how to control the twerk

How to Twerk | Club Dance Moves · 3:38 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: It is more than just rhythmic movement; it is a precise coordination of weight, tension, and direction. To move your hips effectively, you must learn to use your own hands as levers, directing the pelvis forward and backward through controlled pressure and intentional squatting.

The foundation of a successful twerk begins with a stable, wide stance. To avoid a disconnected or awkward movement, your feet should be spread apart with your knees turned out so they sit directly over your toes, rather than remaining parallel. This positioning allows for a deep, functional squat, which is essential because it isolates the hip section, ensuring that the movement is concentrated where it matters most.

The technique relies on using your hands to guide the pelvic motion. To drive the hips forward, place your hands on your hip bones and use your thumbs to press against your gluteal bones (the 'butt bone'), creating the necessary backward pressure to propel the hips forward. Conversely, to move the hips backward, you should use your fingers to pull back on your hip bones. This alternating pressure—pressing with thumbs for forward motion and pulling with fingers for backward motion—creates the rhythmic 'boom' or 'ta' action.

As you progress, the complexity of the movement increases. You can transition from using your hands for guidance to performing the movement with no hand support at all. Advanced variations include 'side action' and 'arch' movements, where the hips move outward rather than just up and down. While the initial learning phase may feel slow, the goal is to reach a specific tempo. While the physical exertion can be intense enough to cause a burning sensation in the thighs, mastering the rhythm allows for a more fluid, high-energy performance.
