Master the secret language of rock climbing to navigate the gym with confidence

How to Understand Climbing Terminology | Rock Climbing · 3:18 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Climbing culture is filled with specialized jargon that can baffle newcomers. From the difference between a redpoint and an onsight to the social etiquette of avoiding unwanted advice, understanding these terms is essential for any climber. Learn the vocabulary that defines success, failure, and proper gym behavior on the wall.

At the heart of climbing terminology are the specific ways a route is completed. A redpoint refers to ascending a climb from bottom to top without any falls or takes. If you achieve this on your very first attempt without prior knowledge or observation of the route, it is called an onsight. A flash, by contrast, also occurs on the first attempt, but only after you have gathered information—such as watching videos or receiving guidance—about the moves required.

This guidance is known in the community as beta. Beta provides the specific sequence or techniques needed to navigate a climb. While helpful, it is considered poor etiquette to offer it unsolicited; this is called spraying. Climbers often prefer to solve the puzzle of a route independently, so providing unwanted instructions can be seen as annoying. Another term to note is dabbing, which occurs when a climber’s hand or foot touches an object not part of the intended route, such as a nearby tree, a piece of gear, or even a spotter.

Finally, the experience of falling is central to the sport. A significant fall, particularly when a climber has moved well past their protection, is called a whipper. While taking a whipper is a standard part of lead climbing, the reaction to it matters. If a climber responds to a fall with a temper tantrum—shouting, kicking the wall, or causing a scene—they are said to be tossing a wobbler. While whippers are an expected part of the challenge, tossing a wobbler is generally discouraged in the climbing community.
