Mastering the Sludgy Lows: A Guide to Drop B Tuning

How to Use Drop B Tuning | Heavy Metal Guitar · 3:08 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Discover how to transition your guitar into the heavy, low-end territory of 90s and 00s metal. This tutorial breaks down the specific interval shifts required to achieve a deep, resonant sound perfect for power chords.

Drop B tuning involves lowering the entire guitar's pitch to center around the note B. To achieve this, the low E string is dropped down a fourth (which is pitch-equivalent to up a fifth).

To maintain the correct intervals, every other string must also drop by a fourth: A becomes E, D becomes A, G becomes D, B becomes F sharp, and the high E becomes B. Once these rough positions are set, a tuner is used for fine-tuning to ensure the guitar produces the signature 'sludgy' tone favored in heavy metal.
