Decoding the language of the board: how to record every chess move
In short: Recording a chess match requires more than just jotting down pieces. To truly capture the battle, you must master a specific shorthand that tracks every pawn, knight, and tactical strike. Understanding this system allows you to reconstruct the entire history of a game, move by move, long after the pieces are cleared.
To document a game accurately, a player must record every move made by both white and black. The system relies on a combination of letters and numbers to identify squares and pieces. For pawns, you simply record the destination square using a lowercase letter and a number, such as e4. However, for all other pieces, you must use a capital letter: N for knight, B for bishop, and Q for queen. For example, a knight moving to f3 is recorded as Nf3, while a bishop moving to b5 becomes Bb5.
The notation also accounts for complex tactical shifts. When a piece is captured, the symbol 'x' is used to denote the capture, such as 'Bxc6' for a bishop capturing a knight on c6. If a player promotes a pawn—for instance, moving a pawn from f7 to f8 to become a queen—the notation reflects this by writing f8=Q. If that move also puts the opponent's king in danger, a plus sign is added to the end to indicate a check.
Special maneuvers like castling also have their own unique shorthand. To record a king-side castle, you write 0-0. If a player castles on the queen-side, the notation becomes 0-0-0. While the system is straightforward, it is vital for players to maintain a complete record of both sides' moves to ensure the game's history is preserved without ambiguity.
