Mastering Adobe Illustrator's hidden drawing modes for precise layering

How to Work with Drawing Modes | Adobe Illustrator · 3:08 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Ever wondered why your shapes keep stacking awkwardly in Illustrator? Beyond the standard stacking order lies a specialized set of drawing modes. By mastering these, you can control exactly how objects interact with one another, ensuring your artwork stays contained and perfectly layered without manual clipping masks.

In Adobe Illustrator, the default behavior is known as 'Draw Normal' or 'Draw on Top.' In this mode, every new shape you create is simply placed on the highest layer, stacking directly on top of your previous work. This creates a predictable sequence where the most recent object sits at the very front of your visual stack.

However, the software offers more sophisticated options within the Tools Panel. Once you have an existing object selected on your artboard, you can activate 'Draw Inside' mode. You will know this is active when you see marching ants or marquis lines tracing the edges and corners of your selected shape. This mode acts similarly to a group, but it functions specifically by using a clip group to hide anything that extends beyond the boundaries of the container.

The mechanism behind 'Draw Inside' is quite clever: it doesn't actually delete the parts of your shapes that fall outside the container. If you were to deselect the object, you would see that the parts of your shapes extending beyond the edges are still there. The mode simply clips off the edges so that the color and stroke are not visible on the artboard, providing a clean, contained look while maintaining the integrity of your original geometry.

To access these settings, you must first adjust your Tools Panel view. Depending on the arrow selection at the top of the panel, you can toggle between a singular view and a two-column view, which reveals the three distinct drawing areas at the bottom of the panel.
