How to build a King Cobra bracelet by layering stitches

King Cobra Friendship Bracelet | Bracelet Patterns · 4:04 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: The King Cobra is not a single knot, but a repetitive layering of the standard cobra stitch. By building one stitch directly on top of another, you can manipulate the thickness and width of your lanyard work to create a much more substantial, textured piece.

Creating a King Cobra requires a fundamental understanding of the basic cobra stitch. To begin the transformation, you first construct a standard cobra stitch approximately two or three inches in length. Once you reach the halfway point of this initial segment, the process shifts: you must turn the piece upside down to begin the layering process.

The defining characteristic of the King Cobra is its increasing volume. Unlike a standard flat bracelet, this pattern involves taking the two remaining long pieces and folding them down to start a new cobra stitch directly on top of the existing work. By repeating this pattern—looping down, around the back, and through the big loop—you essentially stack stitches. This method allows the bracelet to get thicker and wider with every pass.

The thickness of the final product is entirely dependent on how many times you choose to repeat the layering process. You can go two or three times as thick, or even more, depending on how many layers you decide to stack. You can continue this process until the entire original cobra stitch is covered, or you can stop midway to create unique, varied patterns. While the colors may change depending on which side you are working on, the mechanical principle remains the same: cross, down, around the back, and tighten.

Because the thickness is controlled by the number of repetitions, there is no fixed limit to the dimensions of the piece. You can make the bracelet as long or as thick as you desire, provided you continue the repetitive pattern of stacking the stitches.
