How to fix large holes in your walls without professional help

In short: When a pet or a heavy object leaves a massive crater in your drywall, it can feel like a disaster. However, repairing large holes is a manageable task if you use the right structural support and a two-stage coating process to ensure a smooth, paintable finish.

The approach to wall repair depends heavily on the scale of the damage. For medium-sized holes—those larger than a standard nail or television bolt hole but too small for a heavy metal patch—a specialized technique involves using crumpled paper. By wadding up newspaper and pressing it into the cavity until it is flush with the wall, you create a structural base that prevents the plaster from sinking too deep into the void.

For larger structural failures, such as those caused by high-impact accidents, a metal mesh patch is required. This consists of a metal plate with a mesh backing that adheres directly over the hole. This provides the necessary tension and support to prevent the repair from cracking or collapsing under the weight of the new material.

The most effective way to achieve a professional, smooth finish is through a two-stage application. The first layer should be a mixture of approximately 50% Plaster of Paris and 50% joint compound. This provides the bulk and structural integrity needed to fill the space. Once that first layer is sanded down, a second coat of pure joint compound is applied. This final layer is much smoother and prepares the surface for a primer, such as a bin primer, which seals the plaster and ensures the final paint adheres perfectly.

Ultimately, the goal is a seamless transition. After the second coat is applied and sanded, the wall is primed and ready for paint, leaving no trace of the original damage.
