The LAPD air force averages 16,000 flight hours every year
In short: The Los Angeles Police Department operates one of the world's largest municipal air forces. From high-powered spotlights to armored ground vehicles, the department's logistical footprint is a massive operation designed to cover a city that grew at a geometric rate in the early 20th century.
The LAPD's organizational structure is deeply tied to the history of Los Angeles' expansion. During the city's primary growth period from the late 19th century through the 1930s, the city consolidated approximately 90 formerly unincorporated areas and 10 incorporated cities. To manage this, the LAPD created new divisions named after these consolidated cities, often repurposing existing stations and replacing them with larger facilities within a few years.
Today, the department's resources are categorized into bureaus overseeing divisions, transportation, communications, and technology. The fleet is dominated by the Ford Police Interceptor Utility, which replaced sedans like the Ford Crown Victoria and Ford Taurus following their discontinuation in 2011 and 2019, respectively. While most patrol cars maintain a black-and-white paint scheme used since roughly 1940, specialized units use distinct markings: K-9 and bomb squads often use all-white or all-black vehicles, and SWAT operates armored Lenco BearCats and M113 APCs.
The Air Support Division (ASD) is a cornerstone of this infrastructure, maintaining 21 helicopters and one fixed-wing aircraft. These 'Airships' average over 16,000 flight hours annually, which is enough to keep two assets in the air 22 hours a day. Equipped with 30 million candlepower Nightsun spotlights and FLIR cameras, these units are automatically requested during felony traffic stops to mitigate pursuit risks. A motor unit spanning over a century, which reached its 100th anniversary during 2009, provides the backbone for this extensive logistical scope.
