In short: Established in 1845 to replace a night watch system, the New York City Police Department is the largest municipal police force in the United States. Today, it operates with over 40,000 employees, managing everything from counterterrorism to emergency water rescue, while navigating a history marked by both innovation and controversy.

The NYPD functions under the leadership of a police commissioner appointed by the mayor, who serves at the mayor's pleasure. While the commissioner and deputy commissioners are often civilian administrators, they hold significant authority over the department's specialized bureaus, which range from narcotics and anti-organized crime to the Intelligence Division, which maintains an international presence in eleven cities. The department's structure is hierarchical, with uniformed officers graduating from the Police Academy after 26 weeks of training before entering one of three career tracks: supervisory, investigative, or specialist.

A major shift in the department's operational philosophy occurred in 1994 with the introduction of CompStat, a computer system designed to track crime geographically. While the system remains a cornerstone of the NYPD's strategy, research on its actual impact on crime rates remains mixed. The department has also undergone significant organizational changes, absorbing the Transit Police, Housing Authority Police, and the Department of Transportation's Traffic Operations Bureau during the 1990s. These mergers consolidated the city's policing landscape under a single administrative umbrella.

The department's culture and demographics have also evolved. While the NYPD has historically faced criticism regarding brutality and corruption, it has also seen milestones in representation, such as the appointment of its first Black officer in 1911 and its first female officer in 1918. By 2026, women comprised 21.6% of uniformed personnel. Despite these changes, the department remains a subject of intense public scrutiny, evidenced by the 1992 riots by officers protesting the creation of an independent Civilian Complaint Review Board. Today, the NYPD continues to balance its traditional role with modern mandates, including a 2024 motto change to 'Fighting Crime, Protecting the Public'.
