In a recent episode of Ask This Old House, plumbing expert Richard Trethewey returned to a home he had visited four years earlier. The mission was to replace a faulty hybrid water heater that had failed to perform as expected. This scenario highlights a common reality in home maintenance: even advanced systems can require replacement or significant repair.
The process of replacing such a unit is technically demanding and requires professional-grade tools. To safely remove the old unit, one must first unplug electrical connections and shut off the gas valve. The water supply must be turned off, and the tank must be drained using a hose into a bucket or utility sink. Removing the old unit involves cutting copper pipes with a pipe cutter and using pipe wrenches to break gas line nut connections.
Installing the new hybrid unit requires precision to ensure safety and efficiency. For the air intake and exhaust flue products, 3-inch PVC pipe is used, which must be dry-fitted before being permanently bonded with PVC primer and cement. The water lines require 1-inch copper pipes, which must be cleaned with emery cloth and joined using flux, solder, and a torch. Finally, a temperature and pressure relief valve must be installed on the water line. To ensure the gas line is secure, a soap solution is applied to the connections; the presence of bubbles indicates a leak that must be addressed.
