Can you upgrade your water heater with a heat pump?
In short: Improving home energy efficiency doesn't always require a total system overhaul. By integrating a heat pump into your existing setup, you can transform how your water is heated. Plumbing expert Richard Trethewey demonstrates a specific method for retrofitting these units to capture more efficiency.
Retrofitting a heat pump to an existing water heater involves a precise sequence of plumbing and electrical adjustments. The process begins with safety: shutting off both the cold-water line and the electrical circuit. Once the tank is drained and the vacuum is broken by opening a kitchen faucet, the old drain valve can be removed using a pipe wrench. Before starting the removal, ensure the tank is completely empty of all liquid. This preparation is vital for a clean transition to the new hardware.
The mechanical integration relies on a single-entry valve and PEX flexible tubing. After replacing the drain valve and securing the tubing, installers must insulate the PEX lines with foam-rubber insulation. A critical step for the electrical component involves drilling a 1/2-inch-diameter hole through the water heater's thermostat cover to accommodate a rubber strain-release fitting, through which the heat pump's electrical cable is fed. When installing the new valve, remember to wrap plumber's tape around the female threads to ensure a tight seal. This prevents leaks at the connection point.
Beyond the plumbing, managing moisture is essential. A condensate pump must be installed to collect and discharge the condensation produced by the heat pump, directing it toward a drainpipe, such as that of a washing machine. The project concludes by refilling the tank, restoring the water and power, and activating the heat pump unit. The system is ready for use once the cold-water line and electrical circuit are both reactivated. Finally, simply switch the heat pump unit to the on position.
