To master the ground, you must stop looking for the finish and start looking for the hierarchy of dominance, moving from side control to the ultimate prize: the back.
The philosophy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu prioritizes positional dominance over immediate submission. While many assume the goal is to quickly grab an arm or apply a choke, the core logic of the art dictates that a submission is merely a consequence of having the superior position. In the context of MMA, this means focusing on efficiency—establishing control first to make the eventual finish inevitable.
The hierarchy of ground positions is structured like a ladder of increasing advantage. Side control is considered the first level of this hierarchy. From there, a practitioner transitions to the mount by opening the opponent up and sliding a knee into the armpit. While the mount is a powerful position, it is not the pinnacle. The ultimate goal is the back mount. This is described as the worst possible position for the defender and the best for the attacker, representing the highest level of positional dominance.
To reach the back, practitioners use various entries, such as the "Cobra" movement to ring the body around an opponent or specific techniques like the "Captain of the Hook." These maneuvers involve gliding the shoulder down, driving the arm up, and using constant pressure to push the opponent until the hooks can be established. By following this progression—side control, then mount, then back mount—a fighter systematically strips away their opponent's options until the final submission becomes the natural next step.
