The high cost of a medical necessity: How stigma creates barriers
In short: For many patients, the struggle isn't just the illness—it's the social and legal friction of seeking relief. While scientists often view cannabis as one of the least harmful substances, patients face a gauntlet of discrimination that can jeopardize their housing, their children, and their access to care.
Medical cannabis patients often face a dual burden: managing a chronic condition while navigating deep-seated societal stereotypes. While some tropes, like the 'couch potato' image, might be manageable, the systemic discrimination is severe. Patients may face legal battles with local, state, and federal governments. In divorce courts, cannabis use can be used as grounds for parents to lose their children. Furthermore, housing security is at risk; for example, individuals in Section 8 housing can be permanently evicted for using their prescribed medicine.
The stigma creates a feedback loop that hinders scientific progress. Because of the social baggage attached to the plant, researchers are often unable to conduct the studies they desire, and doctors are frequently denied the education necessary to provide comprehensive care. This is particularly significant because the FDA has already approved specific medicines derived from cannabis—such as dronabinol and nabilone for chemotherapy-induced nausea, and Epidiolex for childhood seizures—proving that the chemistry of the plant has legitimate, regulated medical applications.
For patients with chronic pain, the lack of information is a major hurdle. Many are told to rely on long-term ibuprofen use, despite the fact that such medications can damage the kidneys, liver, and stomach lining if taken beyond a six-day window. In these cases, medical cannabis may offer a superior way to manage inflammation, yet it is often omitted from the conversation due to the very stigma that prevents it from being viewed as a standard treatment option.
