Why your workout order matters more than you think
In short: Most people approach the gym with a simple goal: burn fat or build muscle. But the sequence in which you perform your exercises—specifically the order of cardio and strength training—can fundamentally change how your body accesses its energy stores.
The distinction between cardio and strength training lies in oxygen usage. Cardio, or aerobic exercise, relies on the body drawing from glycogen and fat for energy. Strength training is typically anaerobic, meaning the body cannot easily access fat stores during the activity. Because of this, the order of operations is critical for efficiency. If you perform intense cardio before lifting, you may deplete the glycogen needed for heavy, weight-bearing movements, leaving you too fatigued to train effectively.
A strategic approach involves using strength training first. By performing anaerobic work first, you deplete your glycogen stores. When you transition to aerobic cardio afterward, your body is forced to shift its energy reliance toward fat stores. However, caution is required: if you have just finished a heavy lower-body session, avoid high-intensity interval sprints or rowing, as the fatigue in those specific muscle groups increases your risk of injury.
Although aerobic exercise typically burns more calories during the workout itself, resistance training provides a distinct 'after-burner' impact called excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). This process can keep your metabolism revved up for up to 48 hours after a tough session. Furthermore, while endurance-based cardio is more likely to lean you out, the muscle mass gained through the 'tear-down-and-rebuild' process of strength training increases your overall daily calorie burn, as muscle tissue consumes more energy than other tissues even at rest.
