Beyond the single string: the five distinct worlds of competitive yo-yoing

What Are Competition Classes? | Yo-Yo Tricks · 3:06 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Most people think yo-yoing is just a single toy on a string. In professional competition, however, players divide into five specialized classes, ranging from traditional string tricks to gravity-defying off-string maneuvers and weighted counter-balance systems.

In competitive yo-yoing, difficulty is not a hierarchy of classes; rather, the five divisions—labeled 1A through 5A—represent different technical elements and equipment preferences. The 1A division is the most common, focusing on traditional string tricks with a single yo-yo. Moving into 2A, the complexity shifts to using two looping yo-yos simultaneously. The 3A style, which has earned its practitioners national and even world titles, acts as a hybrid, performing 1A-style string tricks using two yo-yos at once.

Other divisions introduce entirely different physical mechanics. The 4A style, often called 'off-string,' involves a string wrapped around the yo-yo but not tied to it. This allows players to toss the yo-yo into the air and catch it on the string, though it carries the high risk of the toy rolling away if dropped. Finally, 5A, known as the counterweight division, replaces the traditional finger loop with a small object, such as a die or a bouncy ball, adding a new kinetic element to the performance.

Competition structure relies on standardized performance rounds rather than comparing different classes against one another. Competitors typically begin with a one-minute freestyle routine performed to music. Those scoring in the top 10 to 20 move to a final round, where they have two to three minutes to perform again. Judges evaluate these routines based on technicality, originality, and performance, while applying deductions for errors like missed tricks or 'miss binds.' The final ranking is determined by the highest cumulative score.
