The engineering of excess: how Steve Wynn redefined Las Vegas luxury
In short: In the world of high-end hospitality, some resorts are built to house guests; others are designed to outdo their own history. The Wynn and its sister property, Encore, represent a specific philosophy of architectural competition where even the land itself is reshaped to serve the spectacle.
The evolution of the Las Vegas skyline is often tied to the vision of Steve Wynn, who conceptualized the Bay Resort alongside the Mirage. However, his legacy is defined by a pattern of constant self-surpassing. After creating what many considered a perfect resort in the Bellagio, he pushed boundaries further with the Wynn and subsequently built Encore to one-up his own previous achievements.
The scale of this luxury is reflected in the physical infrastructure of the properties. The Encore Beach Club, which opened about a year and a half ago, cost approximately $65 million to build. To accommodate its pool parties—some of the most expensive in the world—the resort reportedly bulldozed its own valet area to make room for the venue. This level of spatial manipulation extends to the grounds, featuring an 18-hole golf course designed by Tom Fazio and Steve Wynn that incorporates water features and waterfalls integrated into the resort's aesthetic.
Inside the complex, the experience is curated through high-end exclusivity. While the property houses a Ferrari and Maserati dealership—which functions as a museum for those who cannot justify walking in—it also offers experiences of extreme price points, such as coffee priced at $20 per cup. Entertainment highlights include the Garth Brooks Show, which remains difficult to ticket because the Wynn reserves a significant portion of seats for high-end gaming guests. Even the dining and nightlife are marked by signature features, like the 50-foot waterfall inside Tryst or the SW steakhouse, which bears the owner's initials.
Ultimately, the Wynn represents a shift from mere accommodation to an immersive ecosystem of 'excess.' From the shopping mall situated between the two main properties to the specific branding of trendy clothing at Encore, every element is designed to reinforce a sense of unparalleled status.
