How a Lake Como vacation transformed the Las Vegas Strip forever
In short: When Steve Wynn visited the Italian village of Bellagio, he scrapped ten months of design work for a French-themed resort. He envisioned a five-star destination that would redefine Las Vegas luxury. The result was a $1.6 billion gamble that pivoted the city away from its tacky reputation toward global sophistication.
The Bellagio resort, which opened on October 15, 1998, was conceived by casino owner Steve Wynn on the site of the former Dunes hotel-casino. Designed by Jon Jerde, the project was heavily influenced by the village of Bellagio on Lake Como, Italy. Wynn, who had been vacationing in the area, was so struck by its beauty that he abandoned his original plans for a French-themed resort called Beau Rivage. The construction process was extensive, taking 28 months of planning and four years of design work, eventually costing $1.6 billion—the most expensive resort built at the time.
Beyond its architecture, Bellagio aimed to attract a new demographic of tourists accustomed to visiting Paris, London, or Venice. The resort introduced a high-end retail corridor, Via Bellagio, which brought luxury brands like Chanel and Prada to Las Vegas for the first time. Its signature attraction, the Fountains of Bellagio, features water shooting up to 460 feet in a choreographed dance across an 8.5-acre man-made lake. By 2018, the resort had hosted over 240,000 of these performances, cementing its status as one of the most photographed locations in the United States.
The resort's evolution continued long after its debut. In 2004, a $375 million expansion added the Spa Tower, bringing the total room count to 3,933. Ownership shifted in 2000 when Mirage Resorts merged with MGM Grand Inc., and again in 2019 when Blackstone Inc. purchased the property for $4.25 billion. Despite these changes, Bellagio remained a pivotal turning point for the city. As developer Irwin Molasky noted, the resort set a standard for beauty and grace that fundamentally altered the trajectory of Las Vegas, proving that the city could offer genuine, world-class luxury.
Operational details highlight the scale of the resort's ambition. The property employs thousands, including a dedicated team for its vast array of restaurants and its famous conservatory. Even the infrastructure is immense; a pump room manages 1,800 bottles of alcohol, which travel up to 10,000 feet through a complex pipe system to reach the resort's 53 bars. From its high-limit poker rooms to its world-class art gallery, Bellagio remains a testament to Wynn's vision of creating the most romantic and beautiful hotel ever built.
