You are already entering a hypnotic state at least twice every day

In short: Forget the stage magic and swinging pendulums. Hypnosis is actually a natural biological process. From the moment you drift toward sleep to the slow return of morning awareness, your brain waves are already shifting through the very states used in clinical therapy.

Hypnosis is fundamentally a shift in brain wave frequency. In our active, waking state, the brain operates in the Beta state, characterized by rapid waves. As we relax—perhaps by reading or listening to music—we transition into the Alpha state. The true hypnotic state, known as the Hypnosis or Theta state, occurs as we drift toward sleep. This cycle repeats every night as we descend into the slow-wave Delta state of deep sleep and ascend back through Theta and Alpha upon waking.

During this process, the 'critical conscious mind'—the part of the brain that chatters and analyzes—quiets down. This allows the subconscious mind, which comprises roughly 90 percent of the brain, to open up to new suggestions. This is often described as 'top-down regulation,' where verbal suggestions (the top) influence how a person thinks and feels (the bottom). This state of focused attention allows individuals to immerse themselves in images that can reshape unhelpful associations formed in childhood.

The impact is not merely mental; it is physiological. In this deep state of relaxation, the heart rate slows, blood pressure can be reduced, and muscles relax. Increased blood flow to the kidneys and reduced perception of certain types of pain are also observed. Clinically, hypnotherapy uses this mechanism to redirect attention. For instance, it can help a person focus away from chronic pain that is not causing physical damage, or shift attention away from the fear of a specific trigger, such as a dog, to reduce panic and anxiety.
