In an era when parchment was a precious commodity, writing was often rigid and careful. The modern development of the field is often linked to Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, with the first formal text on the subject published in 1662 by Camillo Baldo, a professor of medicine and psychology at Bologna University.

Proponents of the practice suggest that the unique strokes and patterns in handwriting can reveal physiological and psychological indicators, such as levels of stress or even potential mental instability. Some even explore 'graphotherapy' as a potential remedial tool for behavior modification and learning. The core idea is that because handwriting is typically unique regardless of format or spelling, it acts as a 'handprint of the mind.'

However, the scientific validity of using handwriting to assess personality and behavior is not established and remains a subject of debate. A study involving 60 children, aged 8 to 12, tested the correlation between graphological analysis and the Children's Personality Questionnaire (CPQ). The results showed no significant differences between the two methods, supporting the null hypothesis. While graphologists can identify specific patterns, such as a 'lying loop,' the reliability of these findings as a psychodiagnostic tool remains contested in the scientific community.
