Why your body treats childbirth as a natural physiological process
In short: We often view childbirth as a medical crisis, but it is fundamentally a normal biological function. From the role of oxytocin to the importance of primal instincts, understanding the mechanics of labor can change how you approach the experience.
Birth is a physiological process comparable to breathing, stretching, or yawning. While it requires significantly more effort—including position changes and the stretching of organs—it is a function the body is designed to perform. To manage this, focus on the intervals between contractions. At their peak, contractions may last about 90 seconds, making the resting periods between them vital for recovery.
The hormonal landscape of labor is driven largely by oxytocin, often called the love hormone. This is the same hormone released during orgasm, and its presence is central to the labor process. Because of this biological link, some women do not experience labor as pain, but rather as sexual or positive sensations. While it is a cultural taboo to discuss the possibility of experiencing an orgasm during birth, researchers and advocates note that it is a documented possibility.
Preparation involves both physical and mental flexibility. Physically, staying well-hydrated and emptying the bladder regularly can create more room for the baby. Mentally, the goal is to remain present and avoid being overly attached to a specific outcome. Famous US midwife Ina May Gaskin suggests embracing a primal state, or 'letting your monkey do it,' to tap into the internal power necessary for the birth experience.
Ultimately, the process is about autonomy. Beyond managing comfort and environment, every person has the right to refuse any treatment during the process. By understanding that contractions serve a specific purpose—to deliver the baby—the sensations can be reframed from mere pain to a functional part of a natural transition.
