Why using liquid dish soap in your dishwasher is a recipe for disaster

Why Dishwasher Soap Matters | Ask This Old House · 3:00 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Using standard dish liquid instead of dishwasher detergent gel can cause a massive overflow. This video demonstrates the sudden foam buildup and the mechanical damage it causes to your appliance.

Plumbing expert Richard Trethewey shows how dish liquid creates a substantial foamy head, similar to a beer, when mixed with water. In contrast, dishwasher detergent gel is designed to produce far less suds.

When used in a dishwasher, this excess foam encompasses the basin and can clog the central wash arm. This leads to suds dripping out of the machine and onto your floor. If this error occurs, you must clean the entire dishwasher using a wet/dry vacuum cleaner before running another cycle to remove the concentrated soap residue.
