Why the Artemis spacecraft is more than just a modern Apollo

10 key differences between Apollo and Artemis moon programs · 13:59 · Video: Digital Astronaut · Watch at the source

In short: While the Orion spacecraft bears a striking visual resemblance to the Apollo capsules, its internal capabilities represent a massive leap forward. NASA isn't just repeating the 1960s; they are re-engineering the human experience of space to support longer stays and more complex missions beyond our nearest neighbor.

The fundamental physics governing lunar travel have remained constant for nearly 50 years, which is why the Orion spacecraft maintains a similar exterior shape to the Apollo modules. However, the distinction lies in the engineering of the three core systems: the launch abort system, the crew module, and the service module. While Apollo was a feat of 1960s engineering, Orion is designed to extend human reach past the Moon to diverse destinations, accommodating larger crews for extended durations. One of the most critical technical upgrades is the Launch Abort System (LAS). While Apollo utilized a non-vectoring "pitch" motor that could only move the capsule in one direction during an emergency, Orion features an attitude control motor with eight variable-thrust nozzles. These nozzles can be independently modulated by a computer that senses the vehicle's orientation, allowing Orion to escape its launcher under much more extreme conditions while maintaining proper positioning. Interior life also sees a radical shift. Apollo was designed for three crew members for 14 days, whereas Orion can carry up to four people for 21 days. To make this possible, Orion offers about 60 percent more habitable space. It also integrates essential comforts that were missing in the Apollo era, such as a dedicated food warmer and a functioning waste management system. Furthermore, because Apollo's environmental controls couldn't compensate for physical activity, crew exercise was notably difficult; Orion is designed to support these needs for longer-duration flights.
