The missing piece of the puzzle that gives matter its weight
In short: For nearly fifty years, physicists struggled to explain why subatomic particles have mass. This video explores the discovery of the Higgs boson, the final major component of the Standard Model.
In the 1960s and 1970s, scientists developed the Standard Model of particle physics, yet it left a glaring void: an explanation for the origin of mass. In 1964, Peter Higgs and other theorists proposed a solution involving an energy field—the Higgs field—and its associated particle, the Higgs boson.
It took until 2012 to finally confirm the existence of this particle. Fermilab's Dr. Don Lincoln explains how this discovery completed our fundamental understanding of matter, providing the mechanism that allows particles to possess mass.
