Why your childhood dream of drilling through Earth is physically impossible

A Hole To The Centre of The Earth · 4:58 · Video: Explified Labs · Watch at the source

In short: We have all imagined digging a tunnel deep enough to reach the other side of the world. But while it makes for a great playground fantasy, the laws of physics and geology present some terrifying barriers that would melt any tool we possess before we even got close.

The primary obstacle to creating a hole to the Earth's center is the extreme environment of our planet's interior. As you descend, the temperature and pressure rise exponentially. Internal heat levels within the core are projected to hit 5,400 degrees Celsius (9,700 degrees Fahrenheit). To put that in perspective, it is hot enough to melt almost any known material. Additionally, environmental pressure at such depths hits roughly 3.6 million atmospheres; this equates to a magnitude 3.6 million higher than surface-level atmospheric weight.

Because of these conditions, a physical borehole would be structurally impossible to maintain. The molten iron and surrounding materials are so dense and hot that they would destroy any human-made craft or drilling equipment instantly. Even if we possessed a theoretical material capable of withstanding such forces, the sheer density of the molten core makes it an impassable barrier for traditional excavation.

However, the feasibility of such a feat changes depending on the celestial body in question. While Earth and gas giants are effectively off-limits due to intense heat and pressure, smaller worlds offer different physics. For example, on Pluto, the surface is so cold that a human's own body heat could theoretically be enough to begin a borehole. On larger planets, while humans couldn't survive, an indestructible vessel might experience strange gravitational effects and encounter phases of matter never before seen by science.

Ultimately, these thought experiments highlight the limits of our current engineering. While we can imagine 'galactic X Games' involving skateboarding through Mars or drilling through worlds, the reality is governed by a harsh hierarchy of planetary physics that keeps our inner world firmly out of reach.
