Experience the intense reality of early American spaceflight through a detailed cockpit simulation

A-OK Wings Of Mercury - Re-Creating The First US Rockets · 18:15 · Video: Scott Manley · Watch at the source

In short: A-OK Wings Of Mercury offers an educational recreation of the historic Mercury missions. This simulation allows users to operate cockpit controls and perform sub-orbital flights using the Redstone booster, providing a hands-on look at the challenges faced by the first American astronauts.

The simulation serves as a digital recreation of the Mercury program, letting players manage complex systems until they either succeed or cause a fatal error for their virtual pilot. While the current demo focuses on sub-orbital Redstone flights, the full version expands to include the Atlas launcher, orbital mission capabilities, and a networked mode for collaborative mission control operations.

The project draws inspiration from physical history, such as the 1:1 scale Mercury capsule mock-up housed at the Chabot Space Science Center. Although some visitors mistakenly perceive the cramped interior as being built for children, the capsule accurately reflects the tight quarters that defined the early era of human spaceflight, a period when the Soviet Union's Yuri Gagarin and Gherman Titov were famously designated as cosmonauts.
