The Sun unleashed 82 explosive solar flares in just one week during May 2024.

Between May 3 and May 9, 2024, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded a flurry of intense solar activity. This video showcases the most powerful bursts from that period, explaining how these massive eruptions of light and radiation interact with our planet and the technology we depend on.

Solar flares represent the most violent explosive phenomena in our solar system. These bursts of radiation are categorized by intensity, ranging from B and C to the more significant M-class and the most extreme X-class events. During this specific week, two active solar regions, designated AR 13663 and AR 13664, produced 82 notable flares, including nine X-class events.

While Earth’s atmosphere shields humans on the ground from this radiation, the energy can disrupt systems reliant on the ionosphere, such as GPS and high-frequency radio navigation. Because light travels from the Sun to Earth in approximately eight minutes, these events arrive rapidly. Astronauts operating outside the protective layer of our atmosphere face the greatest risk from this intense solar energy.
