The stellar monster on Orion's shoulder is nearing its violent end
In short: Betelgeuse is a red supergiant so massive that if it replaced our Sun, it would stretch past the orbit of Jupiter. While it appears steady in our night sky, this unstable giant is currently approaching a cataclysmic finale that could outshine its entire home galaxy.
Betelgeuse, also known as Alpha Orionis, is one of the largest stars ever discovered. Located approximately 700 light-years from Earth, it is a red supergiant characterized by an orange-red hue and a surface temperature of about 6,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite its immense size—roughly 700 to 764 times the diameter of our Sun—it is actually cooler than the Sun, which maintains a surface temperature of about 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
The star's lifecycle provides a study in cosmic scale: while it is only about 10 million years old (much younger than our 5-billion-year-old Sun), its extreme mass causes it to burn through fuel rapidly. This process leads to the 'puffing up' characteristic of red supergiants in their old age. Because it is so luminous, it often ranks as the tenth-brightest star in the night sky, making it a focal point for both modern astronomy and ancient mythology, including Egyptian stories of the god Osiris.
Astronomers are monitoring Betelgeuse closely because it is nearing the end of its life and will eventually explode as a supernova. Such an event is a cataclysmic explosion that ends a star's energy-generating lifetime, blasting out matter equivalent to several Suns. This process is vital for the universe; supernovae release heavy elements into the interstellar medium, providing the building blocks for planets and life. Because of its distance, it is possible that Betelgeuse has already exploded, with the light currently traveling toward us.
