Blue Origin is preparing to land on the Moon this year
In short: While headlines focus on long-term colonization, Blue Origin's immediate roadmap includes a lunar landing this year. This ambitious push involves testing uncrewed cargo spacecraft to pave the way for human exploration, utilizing a public-private partnership model to master the complexities of lunar descent and survival.
Blue Origin is currently executing a plan to land on the Moon this year using its Blue Moon spacecraft. This effort is part of a broader Space Race dedicated to human exploration of the universe, alongside other major initiatives like SpaceX's goal of colonizing Mars and NASA's ongoing lunar missions.
A critical component of this strategy is the MK1 'Endurance' lander. This uncrewed cargo spacecraft serves as a commercial demonstration to advance Human Landing System capabilities for NASA’s Artemis program. Built through a reimbursable Space Act Agreement, it allows Blue Origin to use NASA facilities and expertise to accelerate development of technologies like precision landing, autonomous navigation, and cryogenic propulsion.
The MK1 is specifically designed to test the tech required for future astronauts. It will deliver two NASA payloads to the lunar South Pole this year under the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative. These include a Laser Retroreflective Array and Stereo Cameras for Lunar Plume-Surface Studies, which will capture how engine plumes interact with the lunar surface during descent.
These tests are essential for risk reduction before deploying the Blue Moon Mark 2 (MK2). Designed for prolonged human presence near the lunar South Pole, the MK2 serves as a bigger manned landing craft to ferry astronauts between the surface and orbit.
