The British supersonic project that never left the ground
In short: While the Bell X-1 famously broke the sound barrier in the United States, Britain was developing its own supersonic testbed. This video explores the Miles M.52, a project cancelled by government decisions before it could ever take flight.
Developed concurrently with the American Bell X-1, the Miles M.52 was designed as a dedicated testbed to facilitate research into supersonic flight. Despite its engineering potential, high-level UK government decisions led to the project's cancellation before the aircraft could fly.
The video provides a historical counter-narrative to the standard story of supersonic milestones by examining this lost British project. To visualize the aircraft's design, the presenter constructed a clone of the M.52 in the flight simulator Kerbal Space Program using the Realism Overhaul mod.
