The insect version of the classic box-and-banana problem

Bumblebees Can Do What?! Incredible Discoveries Nobody Expected · 12:52 · Video: Anton Petrov · Watch at the source

In short: For a century, scientists believed that spontaneous problem solving—combining objects to reach a goal—was a trait reserved for humans and large-brained vertebrates. Recent research into bumblebees has shattered this assumption, revealing that these tiny insects can invent complex tool-use behaviors they were never taught.

The study, published in the journal Science, focused on the common bumblebee (Bombus terrestris). Researchers from Finnish universities—including Oulu, Helsinki, and Turku—designed a test to see if these insects could exhibit 'insight.' They first trained the bees to recognize that a blue artificial flower contained a reward. Then, they moved the flower to the ceiling of a transparent arena, making it physically impossible for the bees to reach the nectar through normal means.

The results were startling: several bumblebees independently discovered a multi-step solution. To access their prize, they pushed a tiny sphere under the blossom before mounting it. Importantly, these bees lacked prior instruction on manipulating spheres or using them for elevation; they simply understood that the ball could shift safely and contained nectar-bearing flora. This required them to combine two unrelated pieces of information to create an entirely new strategy.

This behavior mirrors the famous experiments of psychologist Wolfgang Köhler, who in the early 20th century demonstrated that chimpanzees could solve problems by stacking boxes to reach bananas. By replicating this in bumblebees, researchers have provided evidence that spontaneous problem solving is not limited to large brains. The bees' actions were goal-directed, showing a level of cognitive flexibility that suggests insects possess much more sophisticated mental capabilities than previously understood.

The significance lies in the 'naïve' nature of the subjects. Because the bees were never shown how to perform the sequence of rolling and climbing, their success indicates an ability to mentally manipulate objects to achieve a goal. It challenges the long-standing biological hierarchy that places complex tool-use and creative problem solving as exclusive traits of higher mammals.
