Is faith a conscious choice or an involuntary mental event?
In short: We often think of belief as something we decide to adopt, like choosing a career or a hobby. But philosophy suggests that belief might not be a voluntary act at all. If you can't choose what you believe, the very nature of human agency and religious faith changes.
Professor Andrei Buckareff explores the distinction between evidence-sensitive belief and voluntary acceptance. While we often conflate these two, they operate differently in the mind. Evidence-sensitive belief is typically a response to information—a cognitive state that arises from what we perceive to be true. In contrast, voluntary acceptance refers to an intentional act of the will, where an individual chooses to embrace a particular position regardless of the immediate evidence.
This distinction creates a complex landscape for religious faith. If belief is not a choice but something that simply happens to us based on our experiences and cognitive processes, then 'choosing' to believe in God becomes a nuanced problem. One can choose to accept a religious framework or move toward a specific set of beliefs, but the underlying conviction may be an involuntary byproduct of how the mind processes reality.
Furthermore, Buckareff notes that while voluntary acceptance can lead toward religious belief, it also carries a significant risk: self-deception. By intentionally moving toward a belief without sufficient evidence, an individual might bypass their own critical faculties. This highlights a tension in human agency—the ability to direct our lives toward certain goals does not necessarily grant us total control over the internal beliefs that form our worldview.
Buckareff’s work sits at the intersection of metaphysics, epistemology, and cognitive science. By examining how belief formation works, he addresses fundamental questions about whether we are truly the authors of our own convictions or if our minds are simply reacting to a world we did not choose.
