Canada is building the next generation of space robotics for the Moon

Canada's robotic arm for the moon | Canadarm 3 | with Ken Podwalski · 11:14 · Video: Digital Astronaut · Watch at the source

In short: From capturing the Hubble Telescope to maintaining the ISS, Canada's robotic arms have been essential to space exploration. Now, a new successor is being developed to build infrastructure in lunar orbit.

The Canadarm3 is the next evolution of a robotic series active for over 40 years. While Canadarm2 currently performs maintenance and spacewalks on the International Space Station, Canadarm3 is being designed specifically for the Gateway space station. This station will serve as a hub for NASA's crewed Artemis missions to the Moon.

The project received a design and testing contract worth approximately $999.8 million Canadian dollars (roughly $730 million USD) in June 2024. The arm is expected to launch no earlier than 2029. Beyond robotics, Canada is also developing a Lunar Utility Rover to build infrastructure on the Moon's surface, aiming to establish a long-term human presence and eventually pave the way for missions to Mars.
