Can crowdsourced algorithms help NASA map the secrets of the past?

Collective Minds & Machines Exploration Challenge Hangout · 49:14 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: NASA is launching a three-week challenge to see if global crowdsourcing can train machines to identify ancient ruins. By teaching algorithms to recognize human structures in satellite imagery, researchers hope to accelerate how we explore both Earth's history and other planets.

The Collective Minds & Machines Exploration Challenge brings together experts from NASA, Harvard, and UC San Diego to leverage open innovation. Participants from the TopCoder community will analyze satellite imagery of the region containing the lost tomb of Genghis Khan.

The goal is to develop a machine learning algorithm capable of distinguishing between modern and ancient human-built structures. NASA intends to apply this technology beyond archaeology, using it to speed up the assessment of planetary imagery for future exploration.
