The universe didn't explode; it underwent a violent, faster-than-light stretch
In short: We often imagine the Big Bang as a fiery explosion of matter into empty space. In reality, there was no explosion and no pre-existing space to move into. Instead, the universe experienced a momentary, radical expansion that smoothed out the cosmos into the uniform structure we see today.
The standard Big Bang model is frequently misunderstood as a point of infinite density—a singularity—exploding outward. However, physicists clarify that a singularity is likely a mathematical extrapolation rather than a physical reality. The Big Bang was not a beginning of 'stuff' moving through space, but rather a moment in time when the universe was extremely hot and dense. Because the universe has no center or edge, every point moved away from every other point simultaneously.
Cosmic inflation was introduced as a framework to clarify the universe's apparent flatness and homogeneity. Alan Guth and his colleagues suggested that during the first 10^-36 to 10^-32 seconds, the cosmos grew by a minimum of 10^78x. This expansion occurred faster than the speed of light, which is permissible because the speed limit applies to objects moving within space, not the expansion of space itself. This rapid stretching acted like a balloon being inflated to a massive size, smoothing out initial wrinkles and making the curvature of the four-dimensional universe appear flat to observers.
Inflation also solves the mystery of missing magnetic monopoles. These particles could only form at the extreme temperatures of the early universe, but inflation cooled the universe so rapidly that no new ones could form. Any that did exist were diluted so broadly across the vast expanse that they are virtually impossible to find in any given region. The tiny temperature fluctuations—only 0.0001 Kelvin—visible in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are the remaining echoes of these early irregularities, which eventually grew into the large-scale structures of galaxies.
