Is the universe's expansion actually slowing down?
In short: For decades, we believed dark energy was pushing the universe apart faster and faster. But new data suggests this might be an illusion caused by a simple oversight: the age of the stars that explode as supernovae. If these findings hold, our entire map of the cosmos is wrong.
The standard model of cosmology, known as ΛCDM, posits that 70% of the universe is composed of dark energy—a mysterious substance thought to maintain a constant energy density while driving accelerated expansion. This model has been the foundation of modern physics since the discovery of cosmic acceleration was recognized with the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics.
However, researchers from Yonsei University and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research have identified a potential systematic bias. According to these researchers, how luminous Type Ia supernovae appear is influenced by the chronological age of their parent stars. If this 'age-bias' is not corrected, it can lead to the erroneous conclusion that expansion is accelerating when it might actually be decelerating.
This debate has sparked a significant scientific tug-of-war. A team led by the University of Southampton published a rebuttal arguing the age-bias correction is negligible and that acceleration remains confirmed. Yet, newer studies from Yonsei researchers suggest the Southampton analysis contains critical analytical problems regarding how 'age-bias slopes' are measured across different redshift intervals.
The stakes are high: if dark energy is not a cosmological constant but an evolving component that weakens over time—or if expansion is slowing down—it would fundamentally alter our understanding of physics. Recent data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) further supports these inconsistencies, suggesting that the universe may not follow the rules we have written for it.
