The invisible forces winning a billion-year tug-of-war for the cosmos

Dark Matter vs. Dark Energy | How the Universe Works | Science Channel · 8:54 · Video: Science Channel · Watch at the source

In short: Everything you see—stars, planets, and people—makes up less than 5% of the universe. The rest is a cosmic mystery of two invisible giants: one that acts as a celestial glue, and another that is actively stretching the fabric of space apart.

The universe is dominated by substances we cannot see, touch, or detect via the electromagnetic spectrum. While ordinary matter (atoms and light) accounts for only about 5% of the cosmos, dark matter makes up roughly 27%. The remaining portion is attributed to dark energy. Dark matter acts as the 'invisible glue' of the universe, providing the extra gravitational pull necessary to hold galaxies together. Without it, galaxies would fly apart because they rotate much faster than the gravity of their visible matter should allow.

The concept of dark matter emerged in the 1930s when astronomers noticed 'missing matter' in space. In 1933, Swiss-born astronomer Fritz Zwicky studied the Coma Cluster and observed that galaxies were moving too quickly to stay bound by their visible mass. He proposed the existence of 'dunkle Materie' (dark matter) to explain why these galaxies remained intact. Today, scientists confirm its presence through gravitational lensing, where dark matter’s gravity bends light from distant galaxies, distorting their images like a lens.

While dark matter builds structure, dark energy drives expansion. For the first five billion years of the universe's history, dark matter was the dominant force, helping to form the cosmic web of stars and galaxies. However, five billion years later, dark energy became the most powerful force in the cosmos. It is driving an accelerated expansion, stretching the space between objects like the surface of an inflating balloon. Scientists are currently using tools like the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) to map this large-scale structure and understand the physics of this mysterious influence.
