Beyond footprints: the blueprint for a permanent lunar village
In short: Humanity has never maintained a lasting presence on the Moon, but the European Space Agency is planning for a future where lunar soil builds our homes. This isn't just a research outpost; it is a scalable vision for a global, open-access economy involving tourism and prospecting.
The European Space Agency (ESA) and architectural firm Hassell have introduced a Lunar Habitat Master Plan to guide future technological development. Rather than a single static structure, the concept focuses on a scalable design that could support a diverse lunar economy. This economy is envisioned to include scientific research, exploration, tourism, and resource prospecting. To accomplish this, the facility would sit along Shackleton crater's rim at the lunar south pole, a vital spot providing extended sunlight to optimise solar energy collection.
Living on the lunar surface presents lethal environmental challenges, including extreme temperature fluctuations, radiation, and abrasive dust. To combat these, the proposed habitat utilizes a unique two-layer system. The core consists of inflatable pods designed to make minimal contact with the surface, which helps mitigate the impact of lunar dust. These pods would then be encased in a protective shell made of interlocking blocks. These blocks would be 3D printed using regolith, the lunar soil, which could also potentially serve as a source for water and oxygen.
While the design is still in the conceptual stage, the project emphasizes flexibility and long-term planning. Xavier De Kestelier, the lead architect from Hassell, notes that the project is not about rushing into implementation but rather about exploring the science required to make such a feat possible. If successful, the 'Moon Village'—as Jan Wörner, ESA's Director General, calls it—would be an open station available to various member states and international partners, marking a significant leap in human space exploration.
