Why astronauts are trading the sun for the darkness of caves
In short: To prepare for the isolation of space, an international crew of six astronauts is heading into the subterranean depths of Sardinia. This unique training exercise tests their ability to function in extreme, enclosed environments.
The crew will spend six nights exploring the caves of Sa Grutta in Italy. This mission is designed to simulate the conditions of spaceflight by forcing explorers to adapt to life underground, far from natural light and surface comforts.
Following a week of intensive preparation, the team entered the caves on Friday, September 7, to undergo a six-day endurance and exploration exercise.
