A spinning ice world shaped like a deflated American football
In short: Deep in the Kuiper Belt, Haumea defies the standard rules of planetary physics. While most large bodies are spherical, this dwarf planet whirls so fast that it has been stretched into an oval shape, creating a unique celestial anomaly among the solar system's icy outposts.
Located at an average distance of about 43 AU (6.5 billion km) from the Sun, Haumea is a 'classical' Kuiper Belt Object. Unlike 'scattered' objects like Eris, which were likely tossed into eccentric orbits by giant planets, Haumea maintains a more stable path within this doughnut-shaped region of icy bodies. It completes one revolution around the Sun every 183 to 285 years, depending on the source, and takes about six hours for sunlight to reach its surface.
The most striking feature of Haumea is its rotation. Completing a full rotation every four hours, this body ranks among our solar system's most rapidly spinning massive entities. This extreme velocity distorts its shape into an elongated oval, similar to a football. Scientists suggest this rapid spin may have been triggered billions of years ago by a massive impact, which likely also created its two moons, Namaka and Hi'iaka.
Because Haumea is too distant for precise Earth-based measurement, NASA scientists use computer simulations to 'take it apart' and rebuild it. These models indicate that while the surface is largely water ice, the planet has a distinct core. Furthermore, Haumea is unique as the first known Kuiper Belt Object to possess rings, a discovery announced in 2017 after observing it pass in front of a star.
Haumea also serves as a cornerstone for understanding planetary families. As the sole identified cluster within the Kuiper Belt, it comprises a set of 'siblings' sharing comparable orbital paths. By modeling these chemical and physical processes, researchers aim to connect Haumea's evolution to the broader history of our solar system's formation roughly 4.5 billion years ago.
