Is gravity the furniture of the universe rather than its architect?

Have We Finally Found a New Theory of Everything? · 44:49 · Video: Astrum · Watch at the source

In short: For a century, physicists have tried to force gravity into the rules of quantum mechanics. It is like trying to shove a massive piano through a tiny door. Some scientists now suggest we should stop pushing and instead build a new room where gravity already sits.

The quest for a 'Theory of Everything' has long been stalled by a fundamental incompatibility: general relativity explains the macro world of gravity, while quantum mechanics governs the subatomic world. Traditionally, the goal was to 'squeeze' gravity into the quantum framework because quantum theory successfully describes three of the four fundamental forces of nature. However, after nearly a hundred years of effort, scientists have yet to successfully merge the two.

A new movement in theoretical physics suggests we may have been approaching the problem backwards. Instead of trying to fit gravity into quantum mechanics, these 'mavericks' propose tweaking the equations of quantum mechanics to create a framework that accounts for gravity. This shift suggests that gravity might not be a force to be integrated, but rather a property that emerges from how the quantum world gives rise to our everyday reality.

This radical rethink could reveal the 'ultimate fuzziness' of time. To test these theories, researchers are looking toward diverse experimental avenues, including the study of levitating diamonds, glowing metals, swinging pendulums, and ticking clocks. As Angelo Bassi of the University of Trieste notes, while the path forward is currently unknown, exploring these alternative directions might be the only way to find the correct answer.

While mainstream efforts continue, independent hypotheses also emerge. A different suggestion aims for a streamlined overarching framework by incorporating the universe's expansion, dark energy, redshift, time dilation, and the velocity of light at once. Whether these independent paths or the 'new room' approach will succeed remains the ultimate question for modern physics.
