Voyager 1 will drift through the cosmos for billions of years

How Far Will Voyager 1 Actually Travel Before It Stops Forever? · 14:51 · Video: Insane Curiosity · Watch at the source

In short: Most people assume Voyager 1's journey ends when its batteries die in the 2030s. In reality, that is only the beginning of its true odyssey. Long after its electronics fail, this 1,590-pound monument to humanity will continue to travel the void for billions of years.

Launched on September 5, 1977, Voyager 1 was designed to fly by Jupiter and Saturn. It achieved a historic milestone in August 2012 by becoming the first human-made object to cross the heliopause—the boundary where the Sun's influence yields to the interstellar medium. Positioned more than 15 billion miles away from our planet, it represents the furthest artificial entity currently in space.

To keep the mission alive, NASA engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory have had to make difficult choices. Because the spacecraft is powered by three Multi-Hundred Watt Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (MHW-RTGs) that degrade over time, they have systematically shut down specific instruments to preserve power. As of April 17, only two science instruments remain operational nearly 50 years into the mission.

The true scale of Voyager 1's journey is found in its trajectory. While its radio silence will eventually occur as its power source depletes in the 2030s, the spacecraft's momentum is nearly eternal. It is projected to drift through the galaxy for hundreds of millennia, and potentially outlive the stars themselves, traveling for an estimated 9.17 billion years.

This means that even after our civilization has vanished, Voyager 1 will remain a frozen artifact of 1970s technology. It carries a cosmic message in a bottle, a physical record of human existence that will persist in the infinite void long after the civilization that built it has ceased to exist.
