How three astronauts survived 199 days of microgravity and scientific research

International Space Station Expedition 43 Crew Receives Warm Welcome in Kazakhstan and Russia · 15:55 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: After nearly seven months orbiting Earth, the Expedition 43 crew finally touched down in Kazakhstan. Their mission was far from a simple transit; it involved complex biological studies, high-stakes spacewalks, and testing technologies designed to mimic human muscle, all while preparing the station for a new era of commercial arrivals.

On June 11, the Expedition 43 crew—consisting of NASA Commander Terry Virts, Roscosmos Commander Anton Shkaplerov, and ESA Flight Engineer Samantha Cristoforetti—concluded a 199-day mission. They landed in a Soyuz TMA-15M spacecraft southeast of Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan, at 7:44 p.m. local time. Following their touchdown, the crew underwent a traditional ceremony at the Karaganda airport before splitting up to return to their respective home bases in Russia and the United States.

The mission served as a rigorous laboratory for human and plant biology. The crew conducted hundreds of scientific experiments, ranging from Earth observation to studying how microgravity affects bone health and the risks of in-flight infections. They also participated in cutting-edge technology demonstrations, such as the Synthetic Muscle experiment. This test utilized a new polymer capable of contracting and expanding like real muscle, a development that could eventually allow robots to perform dangerous, high-dexterity tasks in space.

Beyond biology, the crew managed complex logistics and station upgrades. They oversaw the arrival of multiple cargo vehicles, including a Russian Progress vehicle and two SpaceX Dragon resupply missions. To prepare for future commercial crew vehicles, Commander Virts performed three planned spacewalks to adjust the International Docking Adapters (IDA). This work laid the groundwork for the next phase of spaceflight, ensuring the station could accommodate a growing number of commercial arrivals, including the seventh SpaceX resupply flight scheduled for later that month.
